PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING.....

It takes time to teach your dog a new behavior.
Dogs are pack animals and you need to be the pack leader.
Training is a great way to establish this.

Many short, fun sessions are best. Ending on succesful note is very important.
Remember, your dog wants to please you.

Dogs bark for many reasons, recreational barking and barking due to boredom
can be greatly reduced by providing plenty of stimulation and playtime.
Exersise is also very important as well as obedience and crate training.
Establishing house rules and pack order are important to a dogs overall
sence of well being.

If barking is a problem, here is a trick that can help.
* When your dog barks, give the command "bark"
* Give praise.

This will teach him the bark command, now...teach him to "hush"
* Add a "hush" command after your dog will bark on command.
*When he stops barking.... give praise.

This will give you a way to help your dog associate the command to the behavior.
With practice,"Hush" now will stop the barking.

Other helpful suggestions are to distract the dog with a rattle or an "at" sound,
and to provide background sound for a dog if your going to be gone, such as the TV
or some music.

You may want to look into some obedience classes, they are a wonderful way to socializeand train your dog. Check with your vet, or the local kennel club for availability.

NOTE: most classes will require puppy to have completed his/her vaccinations
as well as rabies.
