Teaching Your Dog to Stay....

It takes time to teach your dog a new behavior.
Dogs are pack animals and you need to be the pack leader.
Training is a great way to establish this.

Many short, fun sessions are best. Ending on a successful note is very important.
Remember, your dog wants to please you.

Stay:

* Call your dog by name to get his attention, place him in a sit position.
you will need to teach him sit prior to stay.

* Stand one or two feet in front of your dog, command "stay" and hold up your
hand palm towards your dog, like giving a stop signal with your hand.

* Have him stay for 5 seconds or so.

* Release your dog with "O.K.", then plenty of praise and a treat.

* Practice three times each session.

* Increase the time you keep your dog in stay.

* Increase the distance you stand from him.

* Move side to side while he stays, if your dogs attention does not stay focused on you
make a sound to recapture it.

* If your dog moves from the sit, physically return him and make an "at" sound.

Tips..
* Practice when your dog is a little hungry.
* Practice three times each session.
* Practice three to five sessions a day.
* Give the command only once, physically return him to position if he moves.
* Release with "OK", plenty of praise and a treat.
* Start using the stay in various places and uses.
* Decrease the amount of treats used.
* Have fun.

You may want to look into some obedience classes, they are a wonderful way to socialize and train your dog. Check with your vet, or the local kennel club for availability.

NOTE: Most classes will require puppy to have completed his/her vaccinations
as well as rabies.
